Superbowl Party

In about 5 minutes, Jody, Liam and I will head to our neighbor's house for this years Superbowl party! The Superbowl (for my international readers) is the final match in the National Football League. Tonight the Chicago Bears go head to head with the Indianapolis Colts. There may be marital strife in our house tonight as Jody is going for the Bears.... because she has family in Chicago, and I'm going for the Colts, because I like the quarterback!!! In preparation, I only made one side of the bed this morning...... (my side, because the colts will win), the looser will be sleeping outside in the 17 degree (F) weather :)
Anyways, I love superbowl parties because we eat pizza and chilli, watch the game and laugh at the million dollar commercials! Good times!!

My New Camera

Jody and I have been saving for a while to buy ourselves a new digital SLR camera. Today I finally made the purchase of this baby. 4.5/5 stars across the board!! I'm very excited. So if you see Jody or I walking around with this camera around our neck or pointed in your face..... just pose, we'll snap then move on :)

Photography is a small hobby of ours...... I'll post some of our masterpieces as we snap them.

Darwin Awards

are bestowed, honoring the least evolved among us. Here then, is the

glorious winner.

1. When his 38-caliber revolver failed to fire at his intended victim

during a hold-up in Long Beach, California, would-be robber James

Elliot did something that can only inspire wonder. He peered down the

barrel and tried the trigger again. This time it worked.....

2. The chef at a hotel in Switzerland lost a finger in a meat-cutting

machine and, after a little hopping around, submitted a claim to his

insurance company. The company expecting negligence sent out one of its

men to have a look for himself. He tried the machine and lost a finger.

The chef's claim was approved.

3. A man who shoveled snow for an hour to clear a space for his car

during a blizzard in Chicago returned with his vehicle to find a woman

had taken the space. Understandably, he shot her.

4. After stopping for drinks at an illegal bar, a Zimbabwean bus

driver found that the 20 mental patients he was supposed to be

transporting from Harare to Bulawayo had escaped. Not wanting to admit

his incompetence, the driver went to a nearby bus stop and offered

everyone waiting there a free ride. He then delivered the passengers to

the mental hospital, telling the staff that the patients were very

excitable and prone to bizarre fantasies. The deception wasn't

discovered for 3 days.

5. An American teenager was in the hospital recovering from serious

head wounds received from an oncoming train. When asked how he received

the injuries, the lad told police that he was simply trying to see how

close he could get his head to a moving train before he was hit.

6. A man walked into a Louisiana Circle-K, put a $20 bill on the

counter, and asked for change. When the clerk opened the cash drawer,

the man pulled a gun and asked for all the cash in the register, which

the clerk promptly provided. The man took the cash from the clerk and

fled, leaving the $20 bill on the counter. The total amount of cash he

got from the drawer...$15.

(If someone points a gun at you and gives you money, is a crime

committed?)

7. Seems an Arkansas guy wanted some beer pretty badly. He decided

that he'd just throw a cinderblock through a liquor store window, grab

some booze, and run. So he lifted the cinderblock and heaved it over

his head at the window. The cinderblock bounced back and hit the

would-be thief on the head, knocking him unconscious. The liquor store

window was made of Plexiglas. The whole event was caught on videotape.

8. As a female shopper exited a New York convenience store, a man

grabbed her purse and ran. The clerk called 911 immediately, and the

woman was able to give them a detailed description of the snatcher.

Within minutes, the police apprehended the snatcher. They put him in

the car and drove back to the store. The thief was then taken out of

the car and told to stand there for a positive ID. To which he replied,

"Yes, officer, that's her. That's the lady I stole the purse from."

9. The Ann Arbor News crime column reported that a man walked into a

Burger King in Ypsilanti, Michigan, at 5 a.m., flashed a gun, and

demanded cash. The clerk turned him down because he said he couldn't

open the cash register without a food order. When the man ordered onion

rings, the clerk said they weren't available for breakfast. The man,

frustrated, walked away.

10. When a man attempted to siphon gasoline from a motor home parked

on a Seattle street, he got much more than he bargained for. Police

arrived at the scene to find a very sick man curled up next to a motor

home near spilled sewage. A police spokesman said that the man admitted

to trying to steal gasoline and plugged his siphon hose into the motor

me's sewage tank by mistake. The owner of the vehicle declined to

press charges, saying that it was the best laugh he'd ever had.

About six years ago I took a speed reading course at a university in Sydney. I learned that our brain can actually process and comprehend information much quicker than we give it credit for when we sit down and read a text. The brain can actually process text in blocks, lines, even whole paragraphs; we can take in all that information at once, with increased comprehension. We actually slow our brain down by reading aloud in our heads (as we usually do when reading). I found this to be very fascinating and true. Here is a small but interesting test to some of the principles of speed reading, its science and truth.

2. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE? As far as I know, no.... however my middle name, which was almost my first name, was a student of my dads....... way cool :-0

3. WHEN DID YOU LAST CRY? Probably watching some chick flic..... I suck at watching those!!

4. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING? NO!! I remember getting pages torn out of my books at school because my handwriting sucked! So I married someone with beautiful calligraphy :)

Vegas Baby

Jody and I went to Vegas on the weekend. Limo rides everywhere, stayed at the Bellagio hotel, won $200 and ate like royalty. Jody's boss took everyone on her team away for the weekend to say thank you.... I got to tag along because I had Liam. :) Me no complain! It was mad fun, my first time in Vegas! Will definitely return one day.

I haven't done this yet, but figure the best way to do it is with some memorable pictures. Here are some of my most memorable moments this year caught on camera.
1) My mum and dad came out from Australia to celebrate Christmas and the New Year together, that's them with Jody.

2) That says PREGNANT! We we're ecstatic!3) Just missed my connecting flight to Australia in LA. I had an 11 1/2 hr wait for the next flight out! So I caught some ZZZZ's

4) Catching up with one of my best mates, Anthony in Sydney. We ate at this great Italian restaurant then lost our car in the city. Good times!

5) that's right, who's the man!

6) Tearing it up in schools! 22 schools in 6 weeks :) It was a heap of fun.

7) Hanging for a day with my Grandad in Perth. I hadn't seen him for about 8 years.

8) The beginning of a great relationship..... Compassion.

9) Ahhh.... the pacific ocean!

10) Riding dirtbikes up random mountains. What a great afternoon!

11) Jody and I on holidays at The Great Barrier Reef. We stayed at this awesome hotel/resort called the 'Rainforest'

12) The Rees's ever expanding clan. We visited them a week before they moved back to Parkes.

13) We got to be there for the birth of my first nephew.... Isacc.

14) Enjoying the airshow..... till we got hailed on!!

15) A VERY pregnant Jody and I on a road trip to St Louis with our good friends Marc and Lisa. (she's now preggo too)

Writers Block

It happens to everyone... And for me, the past two months have been frustrating as I've been stuck in the rut, unable to think of cool ideas to write songs about. So I had an idea last week..... I'll let my creativity pour out through another outlet and hopefully the music mojo will return. So I bought some canvas', new acrylic paint and paintbrushes and begun to paint. Yes paint! I thought about ideas I wanted to communicate then just did it. When I finished, I shocked myself..... I actually liked what I created. And, it worked......... The song ideas once again begun flowing! Thank God for art!!

Chasing Francis

I'm reading a book called 'Chasing Francis' written by Ian Morgan Cron. I highly encourage you to grab a copy if this book and read it. It highlights the role of Christianity in art and social justice and shatters many preconceived notions Protestant Evangelicals have towards Catholic Christians. St Francis of Assisi was a great man who took Jesus words, lived them and changed the world.

For many years I have been able to quote some of his proverbs but never understood the man or his mission. This book Chasing Francis has completely engaged me to want to learn more about his life and ministry.

A brilliant book for all in the arts and for those wanting Jesus......Not 'religion' per se.

Ok, so Laughter has been on my mind recently..... And infact in my dreams. A couple of days ago, I had a much deserved afternoon nap and I had a hilarious dream involving some family members. It was so funny that I was cracking up in my dream and woke myself up and I was laughing out loud!!!! It was so crazy.... Anyone else ever had that experience, laughing oneself awake.?!!

When NOT to fart.......

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- It is considered polite to light a match after
passing gas. Not while on a plane.

An American Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing Monday
morning after a passenger lit a match to disguise the scent of flatulence,
authorities said.

The Dallas-bound flight was diverted to Nashville after several passengers
reported smelling burning sulfur from the matches, said Lynne Lowrance,
spokeswoman for the Nashville International Airport Authority. All 99
passengers and five crew members were taken off and screened while the plane
was searched and luggage was screened.

The FBI questioned a passenger who admitted she struck the matches in an
attempt to conceal a "body odor," Lowrance said. She had an unspecified
medical condition, authorities said.

"It's humorous in a way but you feel sorry for the individual, as well," she
said. "It's unusual that someone would go to those measures to cover it up."

The flight took off again, but the woman was not allowed back on the plane.
The woman, who was not identified, was not charged in the incident.

Laughter

To date their published studies have shown that laughing lowers blood pressure, reduces stress hormones, increases muscle flexion, and boosts immune function by raising levels of infection-fighting T-cells, disease-fighting proteins called Gamma-interferon and B-cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies. Laughter also triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, and produces a general sense of well-being."

Tonight, while playing games with some close friends, I laughed so hard that I fought not to wet myself and could not hold back the tears streaming from my eyes. Infact, I was laughing so hard my head began to ache..... more like pounded. But, I simply could not stop! I think every now and again, we need these hysterical moments........ Dr. Berk (above) thinks laughing is great for the body. So have a good laugh today!

'Tis the season

Christmas decorating was running a little late this year with the addition of a new Parry. Today we finally got our act together and put up the Christmas Tree, put out the Christmas Village and begun decorating the living room...... I did already have the Christmas lights out on the house- kudos to me! We danced around the house to classic 'Bing', while Liam swung in his swing and watched in amazement as I put the lights on the tree. I love this season!!!! It'll be even more fun with a baby :)

Uganda Update

We're planning a fairly large trip to Uganda in March 2007. Looks like I'll have the chance to bring 12 people including my band on the mission, I can't wait!! We are very blessed to have the backing and support from Kampala Pentecostal Church and other local churches to help with the large scale concerts. We will be ministeing to the East Africa Youth Conference for a couple of days, along with performing in schools and university's. Watoto is a wonderful ministry to Children in Uganda and we will also spend some time serving them and ministering to the kids in the orphanage. I can't wait for this trip, throughout the entire planning the hand of God has been all over it and we are expecting to see great things; both in seeing people won into the kingdom and inspiring many believers to embrace their own calling and fulfill Gods destiny for their lives.

Studio Visit

This afternoon I dropped in to a studio in Franklin to visit a buddy of mine, Mark Stocker who is producing a new CD for a very well known songwriter and worshipper.... Dennis Jernigan (www.dennisjernigan.com). I was completely stoked to meet him as for many years I have sung his songs, led churches in worship with his songs and countless times found myself laying on the floor in my own private worship at home offering these heartfelt songs to the Lord. He has written over 2,200 songs, "Too many to ever record in my lifetime" He jokes. This is Dennis 31st album he was working on, and its amazing! Go grab a copy when it comes out. An amazingly talented man with a powerful testimony that has impacted countless lives...... And I got to say, an all round 'top bloke'!

New routines

I was on my own today with Liam for the first time. Jody went to a training seminar for work, she officially returns to work on Dec 5th, but she wanted to attend this course. So last night I was up with the baby, feeding and changing wet diapers. I think I had a total of 5 hours sleep. Then I tried to get work done in between his naps and feeding. I feel pretty good, it seems I managed to get through 90% of my to-do list, 100% of the "very-important" category. Not bad for a Mr. Mom. I can do this ;)

Concert review

Tonight a good mate of mine and I went to see a concert put on at a local Christian church. The headlining act was a band called "Seventh Day Slumber", with opening acts, "Manic Drive", "Firelight", and "Eowyn".

The music was loud and crazy energy from the stage. Kids we're jumping and going nuts, it was great fun. Normally this is not the type of concert or music that you'd find in my CD player but I went to see their live show and see how they performed...... And they all did great.

I was floored however by the ministry of Seventh Day Slumber. I have been involved in the Christian music industry for a few years now and rarely do I see a band as genuine and as ministry focused as these guys. The lead singer closed the night with his testimony, which moved most people to tears then he gave an alter call. I would estimate that over 100 kids came forward! This was the first time I had seen a band do an alter call in over 3 years. Tonight I was challenged and convicted to once again use music as a powerful tool of ministry through moments like these. Most often I roll in, share some songs and perform or lead worship, maybe share a brief testimony before a song, sign autographs and leave to the next date. When I'm honest with myself, somehow I feel that lately "ministry" has been second to doing the "job".

Its very easy for us in ministry, especially the music ministry, to loose sight of our focus. We can be busy performing and writing (which is very important), but forget the core of what we do, which is seeing lives changed. Thank you Seventh Day Slumber for your honest and transparent ministry tonight. Many lives we're changed....... Including mine.

Mute Math Concert

Sunday night, me and a couple of mates went to see one of the greatest bands of today - Mute Math!
I've wanted to see these guys play for a couple of years now and have heard their live show is stellar! True it was!! Talk about energy, these guys explode with it right from the word go.
We we're nestled in down near the front of the stage, but moved to the rear of the room when our ears begun to explode from the loud noise. That was my only disappointment with the whole night.... The music was way too loud! I know it was a rock concert, and I've been to many.... But this was crazy! People all over the room we're holding their ears. You couldn't hear the great vocals and wonderful melodies because there we're so many unnecessary effects on his voice, and it all begun to feedback over the music........ Thus creating a deafening ring.
Still...... The show was amazing. At the end of the set, the lead singer went and smashed all the fluorescent bulbs used for the lighting - it was pure rock star! Funny yet cool - All I could think was, wow - that must cost a bit!

Killer Pancakes

I have these friends who make these killer buttermilk pancakes, I'm talking, fluffy, perfectly round, melt-in-your-mouth pancakes! Ever since my tastebuds partied with this recipe I have tried to re-create the experience myself at home......... To no avail!

I awoke this morning with grand ideas to introduce our house guests (My in-laws) to this wonderful experience. I mixed the ingredients with the care and the passion of
a gourmet chef...... And it looked wonderful.

However, all begun to unravel when the mixture hit the skillet...... I couldn't get these lovely pancakes to go round. They had a mind of their own... Diamonds, hexagons and many other forms of polygons - but no circles!

I thought, no worries, Its all good, these will still taste delicious! I pumped the oven to 350 to keep the cooked pancakes warm. Bad mistake! When I pulled the pancakes out they we're 'crispy'! Who's ever had CRISPY pancakes!!?? They're gross!

No needless to say, everyone suffered through the "non-party" in their mouth, and everyone declined the invitation for seconds. I was crushed! I think I'll stick to making music..... :)

My Quietime

There's nothing like having a great devotional time while listening to some peaceful music. Its my favorite thing to do while reading the Bible, meditating on the scriptures and praying. It sets the mood, and I find it helps clear my mind of distractions so I can focus on what God is trying to say to me.

I feel like I must clarify the information in my last post. I thought my sarcastic tone was evident in the text, and I'd just assumed everyone would listen to the MP3 (like I hinted at) before posting a comment..... It would have made everything clear ;) Alas, people weren't listening to the mp3 below and thought WAY-FM we're actually playing my music........ well, thats not entirely true. See, while its true that I am 'ON' way-fm, I didn't say my music was :)
TRUTH: I did a voice over for one of their promotions called "pay it forward", so all people hear is me talking, saying my name and a few other sentences.

Go listen to the MP3 and all will be clear, maybe my attempted humor would then be seen. Way-fm still don't play independent artists....... Sorry for the confusion folks! Made me laugh though! You're all so kind :) Thank you for your encouraging comments :)

Sorry for my lack of blogging in recent weeks. I have been trying to figure out the fatherhood thing and balancing with sleep and my other duties :-0 I think I am finally getting the hang of things :)

I wanted to comment on a friends recent blogpost at mediabyrd. I'll attach it below:

Is it possible for man to remove God from something?

Recently there has been a bit of a frenzy regarding a certain popular animated children's character property, and edits made to their shows for airing on a certain broadcast network. In the midst of this frenzy, I received a bulk email from Mr. Donald Wildmon of the American Family Association assailing the network for "censoring" references to God out of the shows and continuing their work to remove God from television.

My response to Mr. Wildmon is this: If God wants to play a part in something and use it to reach out to people, is it possible for man to remove God from that thing? This strikes me as being rather arrogant on the part of man.

Aside from the fact that nearly all media outlets have reported this story inaccurately, my challenge to Mr. Wildmon is to step back and examine whether he is making the best use of his resources by calling on people to send 600,000 emails to the network to complain. I for one don't want to be characterized as a complainer.

This attitude is pervasive throughout the music industry as well. I grew up in a church that told me it was a sin to play in 'secular venues'. So when I began singing in clubs, perorming old classics like Frank Sinatra I felt guilty for 'not being a light'. However, I believe that we cannot take God out of something, He is God! If He choses to be somewhere He will be, of that we can be guaranteed. I think it is arrogance on the part of man to think otherwize. Therefore our Christian artists who are performing in venues all around the world everyday need to be embraced by the church, with the knowledge that God is with them when they perform, regardless of the venue.

Liam Harrison Parry arrived yesterday at 12:17pm, weighing in at 8lb 1oz and measured in at 21 inches. He's been sleeping and eating today (yesterday he was up most of the day exploring with his eyes:)...... mum and dad have been 'not-sleeping', but 'eating some.....' :) We're pretty exhausted, and hoping to get some good naptime in today.

Last day..

So, today was Jody and mine last day as "married with no kids". We celebrated by re-working our wills and getting them notarized, a quick meeting with my business manager to organize 2006 taxes and discussing the joy of having kids and tax deductions :) Visiting our dear friends who gave birth yesterday to a healthy little girl, and getting some last minute shopping in. We did have grand plans to go to the movies and watch a few flicks....... but the day ran away on us too quickly.

Please pray for us tomorrow as Liam is born into the world........... I hope we can get some sleep in tonight! We're pretty excited, 9 months of waiting has finally come to an end :)

It looks like Liam is enjoying himself too much to come out and visit us all, still no sign of him. We're good to go here at the house, all the toys are prepped, rocker installed, diapers stocked, clothes arranged, we just need the little tiger to make an appearance :)

In other news: We have moved the Uganda trip back to the Spring '07. Little Liam will be a bit older, I can take more guys on the trip and we can have more events organized over there.

Aussie Festival

Me and some mates wandered down to celebrate at the Aussie festival downtown Nashville at Centennial Park. We ate plenty of good tucker, including cordial ice cones, meat pies, sausage rolls, Tim tams and good old Bundagburg Ginger Beer....... ahhhhhhh, there's nothing quite as refreshing.

Some highlights of the day included.

A fine didgeridoo performance by an Aboriginal fellow, a showing of a small 7-month old joey, a cocky trying to speak........ but was a little shy. A great game of cricket by a team of Pakistanis and West Indians and a game of Ariel ping-pong (AFL) played by the boys in tight shorts! There was plenty of vegemite and drongos walking around in fake outback hats. A diamondback python was being shown off, freaking out onlookers and heaps of good ole Aussie country and folk pub music.

Baby news

Jody and I had another Dr. Visit yesterday to check up on the baby's progress. All is well, we're now at 36 1/2 weeks and he's measuring quite large, so we're hoping he comes soon- Jody is getting mighty uncomfortable. They say after 36 weeks its safe to give birth. It's cool to think that at any time now I could be a dad...... Maybe even tonight :)

Its true, we're often quick to make judgments on people based on the way they look. I recently watched the movie "Crash" - I was speechless for days. While I'd like to say I have no prejudice, when I analyze myself honestly, I am constantly judging people based on their look, smell, race, religion, among other things. I don't want to be like this, frankly I'm ashamed....... God made all people, every race, every tribe in His image. He loves us all passionately and Jesus died for all mankind: Arab, Jew, Chinese, Aussie, American, Lithuanian. I believe there is much we can learn from every culture.

How about you? I encourage you to analyze your own soul and see if prejudice remains........

Every two seconds take a deep breath and cough hard - like you are coughing up something from your chest when sick.

The deep breath will give your body the oxygen it needs and the cough will massage your heart and keep it beating and may even correct it to stability.

Ode to a great Aussie icon

The 4th September is a sad day in the life of Australians. Today we mourn the loss of one of our most loved and cherished modern day icons, an Aussie patriarch who has helped put the 'Land Down-Under' on the map for good.

This morning Steve Irwin, otherwise known as the 'Crocodile Hunter', was pronounced dead after arrival at a Queensland Hospital. He was 44 years-old. Steve was filming a documentary on Sting Rays when one turned and attacked him. The sting ray, a normally docile animal, when frightened stiffens its tail which has a poisonous barb. Steve swam above a ray and the barb punctured Steve's chest straight into his heart.

"The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest dads on the planet," John Stainton, a close friend and colleague of Irwin, told reporters in Cairns. "He died doing what he loved best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. He would have said, 'Crocs Rule!'"

A sad day indeed. All of Australia's thoughts and prayers are with Steve's family and friends. May his legacy live on.

CT scan

So today I went back to the Dr's because my tonsils have decided to meet up in the back on my mouth and have a party........ Causing much pain.

The Doc sent me to have a CT scan of my neck......... Now this was an interesting experience. I get in there and stare at this rather large doughnut machine in a very sterile environment. The nurse asks if I'd ever done this before? I said "no". She the told me to remove all metal objects, earrings, watch, phone etc and said she would inject me with a blood dye. "A What??" I wanted to exclaim, but only a muffled squeak came out of my lips. She then tried to assure me that it will be ok and it needs to happen for the scan to pick up my blood.

I lay down on the tracks and she jabs my arm with the needle, again reassuring me that all will be ok. I'm feeling pretty good, I figured there are many people everyday who have this harmless procedure so this blood dye must be ok. Just before she lets the dye loose into my open vein, the kind nurse said to me. "Now you will feel a warm sensation in your arm, then move to your heard then your groin, it will feel like you've wet your pants, but don't worry you didn't and you won't, its your blood warming up and it will tingle". OK, almost freak time!

Then in the chamber I go, trying to remain calm, and staying still while photos are taken..........

all-in-all an interesting experience to say the least.

Grace to be a dad

The time is ticking down till the moment begins. I guess its a rite of passage for almost every male on this planet - fatherhood. Thinking about this makes me feel a little better, but the task before me still looms. I'm REALLY going to be a dad!

I'm very excited about this new phase of life and honestly can't wait to be a dad, but I feel deep down a small sense of doubt in my own abilities to be a 'good' dad. I wonder if every 'dad-to-be'
has felt this same way, is this the doorway that every father must face and walk through before the arrival day comes??

So I read, read, and read more, I talk to my friends and seek their advice. I devour their stories and try and learn from their experiences to hopefully avoid their pitfalls. I watch and I learn, I learn and I watch and grow.

However, today I realized that while all this learning is good, Its great to grow oneself and to prepare for fatherhood. My questions about my own abilities to be a dad can only be answered from the Bible. I'm reminded of some scriptures I've memorized.

"My grace is sufficient for you............" 2 cor 12:9

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, Lean not on your own understanding. In all of your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your paths". pr 3:5-6

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me". phil 4:13

I guess this is a lesson of life. Everyday is a new step of faith for me, a new adventure, a new frontier, fatherhood is just a new adventure. And I'm excited! And yes, Gods grace is sufficient for me! :)........................ I just have to get over this Mono.

Mononucleosis

Mononucleosis is a viral infection causing fevers, sore throat, and swollen lymph glands, especially in the neck. It is typically caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), but can also be caused by other organisms such as the cytomegalovirus (CMV). Both viruses are members of the herpesvirus family.

This is what my doctor believes I have...... Will know more tomorrow when the blood tests return. I've had all the symptoms for the last week and a half. Apparently it takes 3-4 weeks to set in after the virus is contracted.

Can it be cured?
No. But mono will go away on its own. Symptoms usually last about 4 weeks.

What can I do?

Rest.
Drink plenty of fluids.
If you have a sore throat, gargle with salt water, or suck on throat lozenges, hard candy or flavored frozen desserts (such as Popsicles).
You may want to take acetaminophen (one brand name: Tylenol) or ibuprofen (some brand names: Advil, Motrin, Nuprin) to relieve pain and fever. Do not give aspirin to children. Aspirin should be avoided because it has been associated with a disease called Reye's syndrome in children. Reye's syndrome is a serious illness that can lead to death.

So............... This sucks!

Tom and Jerry under fire

When a witness is bad

Recently one of my neighbor's had an altercation with the person living next door. The two men had sons that are the same age and often played together. They discussed that in the event the boys end up in a fight over something, the men agreed to consult the other and not to discipline each others son. One man is a preacher of a local church the other a nominal churchgoer.

One day the nominal churchgoers son was out watering his dads lawn when the preacher's wife calls out to the boy and exclaims how the boy should come over and water her garden because her husband is a preacher and doesn't have time to attend their own lawn.

the next day the two young boys get into a disagreement over this and end up sorting it out with a fight. No-one was injured only pride. The preacher had some very stern words for the neighbor's boy and he returned home to tell his father.

Saddened that the preacher had not followed through on their agreement the nominal churchgoer went next door to talk about the situation with his neighbor. When he arrived the preacher began by chewing his neighbor out, cussing and making obscene accusations. The neighbor fired back and said "Its because of people like you, that many will never go to church. Hypocritical liars who parade in their own self-righteousness! And you call yourself a man of God! You will never see me in your church!"

I was saddened to my core to hear this! What happened to love? What happened to grace? The preacher obviously needs a vacation. I think this true story reminds us that our Christian witness is 24/7, every moment is an opportunity to build up or tear down. I remember an old pastor of mine giving me this sage advice. "Remember Lucas, you are one decision away from building your ministry and one decision away from tearing it down and destroying it." that's wisdom right here!

A major joke!

Throughout this entire blog I have never spoken out against another individual, and probably never will again, but this guy made me so mad last week and I feel like I need to share the story.

I was over my sisters house flipping through the TV channels at about 10:30pm when I came across a TV preacher called Robert Tilton. I sat listening for 15 minutes to this guy ask people for money, "there's 10 people who need to give $1000, 5 people who need to give $5000........." He would say, then he'd read some pledges from a yellow piece of paper that had "just come in". Not once did he give any spiritual revelation or feed his audience from the Word...... Just simply asked for money. After 15 minutes of this nonsense I was about to change the channel as most of us do, but that's when I heard it! It made me cringe to the core.....

Robert Tilton was facing his audience, who like me are sitting at home watching the broadcast, his eyes got large and he exclaimed. "If you call now and give tonight you will be blessed beyond measure as we cross this new millennium". What the?.............. Its a freaking re-run!! This guys asking for money, and its a re-run!! I got so mad............ I decided to call the number on the bottom of the screen. I got a recorded message to click one to give money or two for prayer. I had no intention to give money, so I clicked two. Again I followed the prompts to leave my name and details and prayer request, never actually speaking to a human.

Why was I mad? Firstly I was grievous over this particular network (BET) allowing a re-run like this to take place..... There is absolutely NO integrity in it whatsoever! Secondly, the people who give money to 'cons' like this don't even have the money to begin with. They are people who so desperately want to be blessed that they will go ahead and give the $5000
from their retirement fund in hopes their money will be returned to them 100 fold! I believe this equates to stealing from the poor! It honestly makes me feel sick!

So, I don't even know what to do with this? I'll send an email to the network BET, asking them to pull the programming. What else can we do about this? Anyone?

World Famous Cheesesteak

Last night me and the boys, Steve and Dom, took Forrest into Philly to visit "Pats", World famous for his original Philly Cheesesteak. They say it aint real unless you leave with fat dripping down your arm after devouring the piled cheesesteak that you waited 20 minutes in line to get. Steve had two of these monsters!!

Anyways, it was a fun experience...... Although mighty expensive. $7 for an "American - wit", It must only cost em $.50 to make... plus a coke and fries is another $4 - thats a huge mark-up!! but, people still line up the street for 'em. Good on ya Pat! That's all I can say.

Singles group then church

Last night I played a concert for the singles group "Journey" at GCCC. It was a great night, the folks there were great! Afterwards Forrest and I ate gelato and water ice with Josh and kate, a cool couple we met the night earlier, then hung out at their pad after. Josh is a very talented designer and artist starting his own design company...... they too are expecting their first child real soon.

Today, we slept in (finally), then busied ourselves and played the Wednesday night service at GCCC. We had a good crowd of about 150 rock up, they totally rocked. It was a powerful night of worship!

NJ Tour

Heya folks! I'm up in NJ/PA for the next two weeks, my run of shows begun last Saturday just outside Philly at the Solid Rock Cafe, it was a small, intimate, coffee shop atmosphere. The place was packed though, which created a great vibe............

Then we headed to Millersburg to play at "Hillside" (My brother in-law's church) for Sunday morning service. We played "Made to Fly" (We meaning Forrest and I, Forrest plays guitar for me and came out on this tour), then ate lunch at the local dive called "The Wooden Nickel". Great times!!

Monday came around and we hit Hershey PA. Yep, thats right, the land of chocolate. Here's Forrest and I on the hershey factory tour. We also managed to sneak in some shopping at the baby outlets for Liam.

Last night we played at "Elevate", an awesome young adults group who meets at Clayton Baptist Church in NJ. It was a powerful night of ministry and heaps of kids were sponsored. Good croud turn out, somewhere between 150 and 200......

Podcasting II

The last couple of weeks a friend of mine and I have been toying with the idea of starting a bi-weekly podcast. I cant go into too much detail yet on it, but I can say it will be rather exciting. Here's the things my podcast WONT be:

1) Boring! I hate boring podcasts....
2) A one man show, with lots of rambling on.
3) filled with useless information.
4) about music or my life on the road.

Oh no....... the podcast we're planning will have nothing to do with music, but everything to do with my other hidden passions of business, culture and people who achieve 'great things'.

That's really all I can say for now. But, be sure I'll keep you posted as things progress.

Schools tour ramping up

It will begin in Huntsville AL the last week of August, then a week off, after that its on to Atlanta GA in September. Ok, so I've been a bit slow to jump on the podcast bandwagon, but now I'm totally hooked! Its like on demand TV........ I browse through what I want to listen to then download the podcast and listen to it while I'm at the gym in the morning. Here is a list of my favorites:

(AP) Soda in a sippy cup?

Most parents wouldn't dream of it. But researchers say that when a baby's bottle or cup is filled with juice — even the 100 percent, all-natural, no-sugar-added stuff — parents might as well be pouring Pepsi.

A growing body of science is linking sweet drinks, natural or otherwise, to a host of child health concerns, everything from bulging bellies to tooth decay.

"All of these beverages are largely the same. They are 100 percent sugar," Dr. David Ludwig, an expert on pediatric obesity at Children's Hospital Boston, said recently. "Juice is only minimally better than soda."

The trouble is that parents who are quick to limit a child's soft drink consumption often overlook or even encourage juice indulgence thanks to the beverage's good-for-you image.

But that image can be overstated. Though healthy in moderation, juice essentially is water and sugar. In fact, a 12-ounce bottle of grape soda has 159 calories. The same amount of unsweetened grape juice packs 228 calories.

The $10 billion juice industry maintains that a conclusive link between its products and obesity has yet to be established, but researchers say sugar is sugar, and sweet drinks of any kind must be consumed with care.

Overuse of juice is a relatively recent phenomenon. Before the rise of soda, juice and other sweetened drinks during the latter half of the 20th century, water and milk were children's primary beverages.

In a nation where nearly a third of children are either overweight or at risk of becoming overweight, health officials now say high-calorie beverages have little place in a young child's diet.

"With the possible exception of milk, children do not need any calorie containing beverages," Ludwig says. "What is needed to replace fluid loss and satisfy thirst is the same beverage we've been drinking for millions of years, and that's water."

The danger of juice is that too much can throw off the balance of calories and nutrients children need, according to Dr. Terrill Bravender, director of adolescent medicine at Duke University Medical Center.

In very young children, too much juice cuts the appetite for nutritionally superior breast milk or formula. In older children, it often supplements other foods, potentially adding hundreds of excess calories.

Part of the problem is that the calories in juice are so concentrated. Just half a cup (4 ounces) of apple juice has 60 calories, the same as a whole apple, but without the fiber that makes fruit filling.

In 2001, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued guidelines saying fruit juice should not be given to children younger than 6 months, and that there is no nutritional reason to give it to them before their first birthday.

After that, juice is optional, though the group favors whole produce and urges parents to limit juice to 4 to 6 ounces a day for children up to 6 years old, and to no more than 8 to 12 ounces for older children. Experts say pudgy children should avoid juice altogether.

Those guidelines concern the juice industry, which markets 6 3/4-ounce juice boxes and bags to kids. Children drink about a quarter of all juice consumed, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Carol Freysinger, executive director of the Juice Products Association, says some producers have felt an impact since the pediatrics guidelines were released, but she wouldn't elaborate.

She is critical of doctors telling parents to eliminate juice, saying it gives a bad name to a healthy beverage and could prevent people from getting important nutrients juice offers.

Despite the guidelines, 60 percent of 1-year-olds drink juice, averaging 11½ ounces a day, according to 2002 USDA data. That's up from 57 percent less than a decade before.

The USDA also found that more children younger than 1 are drinking juice, up from 35 percent to 39 percent, though they are drinking less of it.

While juice can be a healthy way to occasionally get picky children to consume more fruit, researchers say using it too often can exacerbate bad eating habits by training kids to prefer — and hold out for — something sweet.

Dr. William Dietz, with the division of nutrition and physical activity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says parents need to be firm — thirst is satisfied with water, hunger with solid foods. Caloric beverages can blur that line.

Kimberly Kwitkiwski, a mother of twin 2-year-old girls, has found a middle ground. She is careful about her daughters' sugar intake, but since Jade and Jillian won't drink straight water, she spikes it with a few ounces of low-sugar juice.

Over the course of a day, the Hooksett, N.H., woman's children get only about 4 or 5 ounces of light juice.

Despite her vigilance, Kwitkiwski says it's easy to be confused by mixed messages, especially on product labels. She wonders how many parents realize "no added sugar" doesn't mean "low sugar."

Ludwig also is critical of juice marketing efforts, saying parents are easily misled into thinking they are making healthy choices. He was particularly critical of one bagged juice beverage's claim that it "hydrates kids better than water."

"This is an example of how children's diets can be perverted by the unbridled actions of the food industry when it places private profit ahead of public health," he says.

Steak today!! :) However........ I have decided to end the diet a little early as Jody and I are going away for the weekend - Its our last 'horrah' before the baby comes. In two weeks I'll be on tour up in NJ/PA area, then I get home and will head to Huntsville AL, kicking off this years schools seminars. This will be the last chance we'll get away, so we're going to take it.

I'll bring some pics of our journeys to St. Louis when I return on Monday.

Plenty of bananas today............... Still no extra weight loss.

Crappy cleansing diet! Or maybe its the fact that I've been working out twice as much as I normally do??? Hmmm, maybe next week will be a good indicator to see if its worked.

However, I feel great! All the nutrients my body is now feeding on in doing wonders, I'm sleeping great, I'm running faster and longer....... I can't complain I guess.

This diet has been a good experience for me and I've implemented a lifestyle change. I've decided that eating healthy should be a decision I make everyday, not just on a 'cleansing diet'. I've found it easy to take down the vegetable soup, I love fruit, and learned that lunch doesn't need to be a huge meal. So, from now on, I will snack on fruit and veg, and not have a major meal at lunch. Just a simple salad, or a sandwich, with some fruit. Eat smart - healthy heart! (My quote of the day).

began the day with a smoothie..... Orange, peach and mango.

I must confess, today I cheated a little, I was only meant to eat fruit and veg, but I ate a sandwich for lunch........ ;-0 I couldn't resist!

Hit the gym at 4:30 for a big workout then went for a PM walk with Jody.

Now I'm veging in front of the TV watching "Americas Got Talent".

Before I begin day two, I have a confession to make. Last night, I didn't make it to the gym as planned. After hitting the workout twice yesterday and not replenishing with the needed carbs, I was wiped out at 8:30pm, so I hit the sack at 9:00 instead of going to the gym.

Today I awoke to massive hunger pains, but refreshed from a long sleep. I jumped on the scales...... and it read 179 lbs. So, I've lost two pounds! Not bad for a days hard work.

After all the fruit yesterday, I felt very acidic all day. I'm not a huge fan of melons, so I didn't eat any. If I did, I probably would have felt better.

Its all vegetables today and a baked potato tonight! Yes!!

The diets begun....... Cleansing is the word!

I woke early this morning and headed for a 30 minute brisk walk at the gym. On the way I ate my first piece of fruit, a nectarine, and it was delicious!

I snaked at 10:15 on a Granny Smith apple........ Which was sour!

For lunch I ate a bowl of "0-calorie" vegetable soup and a few slices of pineapple. I admit, it was not the tastiest bowl of soup I've ever had...... But, it was good for me so I can't complain.

My weigh in this morning was 181 pounds. Lets see how many pounds I'll loose this week.

This afternoon, I will hit the Gym at 5:00pm for some weights than at 9:00 for a cardio workout.

Cleansing Diet

Over the next week (beginning Monday) I have committed myself to take part in a cleansing diet known as the "Sacred Heart Medical Diet", with a mate of mine. Its a 7 day routine that begins with a vegetable broth/soup for the first day and then each consecutive day new foods are introduced. The originators of the diet claim that "one is guaranteed to feel better, loose 10-17 pounds, and have more energy." So I'm out to see if their promise is true.

Important notes:

I am at the gym 4-6 times a week most weeks, so for this cleansing week I will continue my routine but also throw in a morning jog, to try and maximize the weightloss.

I will document this process everyday and weigh in (morning). So, If you feel inclined join me on this week of cleansing please do and leave comments, or simply amuse yourself everyday by checking in on my progress.

Here's to a healthy heart, liver, kidney..... and every other bodily organ!!

Holy People

Holy People

"The truly holy people I've met in my life are really interesting people. They're a mix of the most incredible godliness and at the same time, the most unbelievable earthiness. I know a woman who curses like a sailor, but she's the most holy woman I know. She is! I'm not kidding. We've created this image of what holiness looks like that's just nonsense. Good holy people probably drink too much some times, and have colorful language, and there's plenty of room in the Bible to see people like that. We have to see life for what it is, entirely more complicated then simple. Spirituality is not simple; it's complicated. It gets messy sometimes."

While I can't say this has been true of every "holy person" I've met, but 80% of the time it has been 'spot-on'. I think it messes with our conservative view that God only uses perfect people. But the truth is, we're all far from being perfect! Everyone has secrets, no-one can rely on their own self-righteousness for entry into heaven....... But we often parade around with our pious attitudes and condemn those around us who have a 'visible' sin!

The truth is, God loves us all- and we're all sinners. He doesn't expect us to be perfect as Christians, we are all on a journey to be more like him yes, but it will never be attained in this lifetime. Its about time we quit pretending 'we've got it together', quit judging and condemning people, and moving on making a difference in the world with the gifts and talents God has given us individually to serve.

Movie reviews

Jody and I spent Friday night at the movies, here's my reviews of what we saw.

Nacho Libre: 4/5 on the funny meter.

Goofy humor, if I wasn't laughing aloud I was chuckling. Its a good movie overall, not sure if I caught a moral in the subplot? But it was brainless fun, which is good every now and again. If you are a fan of Napoleon Dynamite, you will like this movie........ Try to watch this one late at night, I think it would add to the experience.

This movie is almost predictable and typical. But, Adam Sandler manages to make anything funny. I was in stitches quite a few times, so much that I was conscious I may have been laughing too hard and disturbing the other movie goers in the cinema. This movie also made me tear up at the end....... It actually comes full circle and pulls on the heartstrings. I felt like I was blindsided by an uppercut, one does not attend a funny movie and expect to be moved to tears....... 'Sneaky sneaky'. Worth a watch!

Confusing messages

I had an interesting experience at church this morning, and I'm not sure how to digest it, let me know your thoughts on the issue.

During service this morning a young, purple heart recipient Marine was invited to the stage. He had recently returned from service in Iraq and is apparently a member of our church. As he came up to the stage he was greeted with a standing ovation and much well-wishes from everybody in the auditorium. What came next was somewhat interesting...... The Marine was handed a microphone and he uttered these words. "Thank you for your prayers, we are the sword, but you are our shield, your prayers are our shield". He then gave back the microphone to more applause.

Ok, first let me state my opinion on the current war in Iraq, then I'll explain why I felt disturbed by the event this morning.

Firstly, I am not a pacifist by any means. I am a supporter of the ousting of the Saddam Hussein and am glad he's been taken away. I think the Iraqis deserve freedom, and frankly Saddam was a threat to the stability of the entire gulf region. He's gone..... Great! I also think its good that the US and other countries have troops staying behind to help rebuild the infastructure to facilitae the rebuilding of a nation, including helping a fledgling democracy take root - a difficult process indeed. I also support every American and ally troop who has fought for the nations for which I am a citizen and resident, I owe much to these service men and women. As for the future of troops in Iraq, well..... I hope they can come home very soon. Let me also note, I firmly believe in praying for the troops, in fact I often pray for their safety, for the preservation of life and for the families of those left at home.

My concern with this morning's church service, was its implied message. The message issued from the stage and cheered on by the audience was that this war is a 'holy war' and that God is fighting for us, the west. It implied that we 'the Christian west' are Gods "sword"....... woooah!! I for one do not believe that God has any favorites in this war, He is as disappointed in it as we all are, war is never pretty. Moreso, God loves every Iraqi as much as he loves me, how therefore could He be fighting for us?

This is not a 'holy' war anymore than the 'Crusades' we're done in the name of God.

I will continue to pray for an end to this war, that terrorists will be caught and for peace to come quickly. But, let us not "Christianize" this war.............

Emergent Church

Last year around this time I attended a rather large youth conference here in Nashville and the 'buzz word', or chould I say 'concept' was..... "The Emergent Church". I was introduced to the topic by a speaker by the name of Dan Kimball, and I've since discovered, "he's kind of a big deal" when it comes to this topic.

Its been almost a year, and I find myself constantly thinking about the concept. Actually, I must be honest and confess, I have thought this is the way church should be done for many years now. A church who is free to express worship to their creator, a church who lives a missional lifestyle everywhere they go, a church full of love and grace, a church stripped of its iconic self righteous pride, a group of believers who are passionate about people and not just the programs. I could go on, but, this concept of "The Emergent Church" resonates with my being in a very melodic way.

Here's an article I had published on www.grassrootsmusic.com about 9 months ago. I was thinking about it today and thought I'd share it with ya'll (said in my best southern twang).

UNITY IS NOT A FOUR-LETTER WORD

This has been a subject running through my mind recently and was at the center of a discussion between my wife and I, during our travels through the yellow/green fields of Ohio last Sunday afternoon. Why is such a simple and universal truth, so hard to live out within the Christian culture?

Jesus' heart for unity among believers is clear as He prays to God on the eve of his crucifixion (John 17:23) - "May they be bought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me". Jesus knew that if God's children were to live in unity, the world would turn and believe. This morning during my quiet time I read Romans 15: 1-13, go have a read yourself and see the instructions it lays out to Christians on this topic.

It should be a no-brainer, but everyday I speak to pastors and youth pastors who tell me they have no relationships with other area pastors. Its like they live on an island isolated by their different worship styles and beliefs, but with no desire to build a bridge. They're content to be a candle burning under a clay pot rather than a lighthouse on a hill.

Church, we need to live out what Christ commands, we need to 'live in unity with one another'. Let us put aside our small differences, prejudices, suspicion and mistrust and focus on the things that unite us: Christ, His suffering, His death and resurrection, and the truth that faith in Him alone brings salvation.

This is the reason Christ died and the reason we live, to proclaim the message of salvation to a hurt and dying world. Protestants to Catholics, Methodists to Baptists, Conservative to Charismatic the Pentecostal and anyone else in between, let's unite in this cause together, let the world see that we are one, and let our love for one another be our beacon pointing to Christ. Let us be a city on a hill, a place of refuge for the hurting and hungry, and let us allow the world to see us living in unity by working together in our local communities.

Depressed....

I write this post with such a heavy heart. After dominating the game for 89 minutes, and with Italy only having 10 men on the field due to a red card issued in the 51st minute, Lucas Neil, an Aussie defender made a 'dufus' mistake and gave away a penalty kick in the box with less than one minute to go. Devastating........... The Aussies played valiantly and deserved the win today, but, this is football! And we lost.........

I have the same feeling I had during the last season I played soccer when I was 17. We played our last game against a team who were last on the ladder, and my team was tied for first place. All we needed in this game was a draw. So, 1 minute to go, the score is 1-1, we're 60 seconds away from the premiership win, we have the ball in their half (I'm playing right wing). Their center back has the ball, boots it down the field towards our goal, an easy catch for our goalie....... but, he flubs it and it goes in the back of the net. Right there, with that kick, I saw the premiership trophy slip away. 60 seconds from the end of the game....... I was crushed! A whole season of work, lost by a silly mistake! So, I can very well imagine how the socceroos feel right now........ How I felt x10!!!

Oh well....... Sorry fellas. You did great in my book. I feel proud we made it this far. Heads up to the best Aussie soccer team ever!! Ya did good!

Faith and gifts

My wife and I had a fun night over our friends house last night. We played a varied version of UNO and laughed hard... the conversation then turned to spiritual things as we discussed "Spiritual Gifts and Faith".

The Bible is clear that we are all given some of these 'gifts' and we are encouraged to eagerly seek after them, we are also exhorted to "Live in the Spirit"....... what does all this mean?

I find that to operate in my gifts I often have to take a 'shift in gear', almost like I can switch them on and off at will. I make a choice. We discussed how, operating in your gift(s) often means stepping out in faith, taking a risk. Maybe God's given you a dream with an interpretation for someone and you need to talk to them, or you feel you need to go up to someone and just listen to them talk, or you may feel you need to give someone a gift?All these scenarios require us to respond, and act. I believe that the gifts are activated and operate out of faith. The Bible teaches us that "without faith its impossible to please God", so if we are to please God we should be operating in our gifts, which is living in the spirit, which pleases God. Food for thought today! Make a conscious effort to switch on your gift and operate in it today.

We got beat!

I stood the entire game. Jody's repeated pleas for me to sit down and relax fell on deaf ears as my eagerness to watch the Socceroos lead us to our first World Cup win against the champs.... Brazil! But, it wasn't meant to be. The Aussies played well against a formidable Brazil team full of superstars, we just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. Kudos to the Socceroos though, they played as a team, great defense and strong attacking offence..... My applause goes out to Guus Hiddlink for spearheading Australia's best National soccer squad to date. Next up, Croatia...... a solid opponent, but It should be an easy win for the Aussie team, taking us into the final 16.

Exciting times

Thursday was an exciting day for us, we hired our first employee! She will help put together the new schools program which begins in late August. We're very excited to have her on board and look forward to visiting over 200 schools this coming year. Please pray for us over the coming months as we get this thing up and running.

Amazed

For those of you who have my CD 'Made To Fly', and I'm assuming you all do :) I thought I'd give you an insight into the song and why I wrote it.

When I moved to NJ to marry my wife. I felt God ask me to take a year off heavy ministry to enjoy being married and sow into the relationship. So both Jody and I took a step back and out of our leadership roles at church and played second fiddle.

About 9 months into our 'break', I received a phone call from the Christian radio station WXHL.
They had somehow been given a copy of my first CD, and EP I had recorded in Australia. They loved it and asked me to compete in their upcoming talent search competition. I politely declined, and thanked them for thinking of me, and informed them I had not yet completed my year of 'time out'. Well, after three phonecalls and numerous letters in the mail from them, I began to seek God and ask if this was really Him. Jody and I prayed about it and felt that I should enter. So I wrote a quick song, formed a band and entered the competition...... and WON! Crazy hey! So...... the band I formed for the competition decided we should make it official, and do the 'band thing'. We called ourselves 'Tuned-In'. We wrote some more songs, toured with a Gospel group for 6 months and all moved to Nashville. The Mecca of Christian Music. Soon after our move however, we all decided that the band wasn't really what we wanted and it fizzed out.

The song 'Amazed' I wrote with the bass player from that band called Mark Rampulla. One day we sat down and decided to write about how awesome God is and what he's done in our lives. One word seemed to sum it all up...... Amazed! I can't help but worship to this song.

When is a new CD coming??

Well, to answer your many questions about this. I have began writing for a new project, re-working some older songs and fleshing out Ideas I've recorded over the past two years. I want this next CD to be something special, so I'm taking my time to get the right songs.

Timeline: I anticipate starting the recording process early next year. The baby arrives in October and those first few months of adjustment will be rather intense, so I want to leave a few months before I launch into the new project. After all the mixing, mastering and pressing of the CD, I would say, this time next year, I should have a new CD out!

* The 'Atari' and then the 'Commodore 64' was the coolest invention in the world. I used to spend hours programming code on this futuristic machine to watch a stick figure kick a square ball. Here's an interesting article I read this morning CLICK HERE, history books tell us that the size of the worlds first calculator was that big. How we've progressed, in only 10 years!

* traveling on an airplane meant flashing your passport, walking through a quick screening process, a stroll to the plane and off we went. Nowadays, I need to plan an extra two hours into my trip to allow me time to get through the extra security checkpoints.

* The home phone rang, I was eager to answer it because someone exciting was on the other end, possibly calling for me. Now, I have caller ID and if I don't recognize the number I refuse to answer it. Telemarketers have made me dread that ringing tone which use to bring me such joy as a child.

* I could fill up my car with gas for $7. Now I pay $50!....... Something is wrong with this picture, especially when oil companies are raking in billion $ profits each quarter.

And I'm only 27........ How the world has changed. It makes me wonder what life will be like when my son is 27?!

I highly encourage you to watch the above movie called "The Invisible Children". We simply cannot be silent about these issues. I watched this video this morning and wept as I saw the raw footage and heard these all too familiar stories.

I have traveled throughout Africa on numerous occasions and have seen first hand much of the poverty, AIDS and slavery which we seldom hear about. This video captures the atrocities that have plagued Northern Uganda for years, a modern-day genocide, children being abducted and forced into war.

I am heading to Uganda and Kenya in November. I ask myself, what more can I do? I encourage you to ask the same.

Aussies streak to victory

What a day!! History was made in the final ten minutes of Australia's first World Cup game against Japan. Its Australia's first appearance in the World Cup since 1974. We trailed most of the game after a goal was allowed by the Egyptian referee, which was clearly a foul, the goalkeeper was pushed out of the way of the ball. But in true Aussie style, "never say never", two substitutes Tim Cahill (2) and John Alosi (1) came on the field and struck home - bang, bang, bang!!! I'm sure there will be much celebrating tonight!

I must admit, I was so ecstatic at our win that tears filled my eyes as the whistle blew. A self-confessed Soccer fanatic, I have waited all my life to see Australia in the World Cup. I've seen many disappointments along the journey, but Australia clearly has its strongest team ever at this years World Cup. Although we have a hard road to go, next game against favorites Brazil, if there is ever a year Australia can make it to the finals....... This may be it!!

Life is short

Today I was discussing with my wife how life seems to fly on by, especially as I get older. I blink and a year passes by! It made me think: If life is short, I need to do the things that I value and cherish, so I made a list of the things/activities I think are important, things that make me happy. Here is that, which I will focus my attention on, before my life slips on by. In no particular order......

1) traveling. I love to visit new countries and experience new cultures.

2) The outdoors. I enjoy being in Nature: Bushwalks, kyaking, hiking, climbing, surfing etc. So lots more of that!

3) Do humanitarian/missions work overseas in needy countries.

4) Be a vocal advocate for poverty, AIDS, Orphans and other Social Justice issues.

5) Encourage and inspire people through music and concert experiences.

6) I love art! Visit art museums around the world. Spend time creating my own art, through music, photography, video, writing and other various mediums.

7) Spend quality time with family and friends.

8) Help and inspire others to live out the full destiny God has placed on their lives.

If life will pass me by, I want to enjoy every moment of it!

Net Neutrality

Have you heard of this yet? Well, from what I can see, this could become a pretty serious issue. Large corporations have been lobbying the government to pass a law that will allow them to control what internet sites their consumers will visit, which get the fastest download, and who gets blocked. I believe this will open a Pandora's box of problems for the next ten years of internet use. These companies are fueled and motivated by money and capturing market share. If they own the internet gateways, they will begin placing 'tolls' and 'taxes' on website owners to have their websites places on the 'fast' servers or those small companies who cannot afford the tax will be left out. Right now the internet is an even playing field, and while I do not agree with all the content displayed on it and there are a few subjects/topics I would like to see banned or blocked like porn sites, racist sites, terrorist sympathizers etc. But, it is this freedom of speech that we have that makes the internet great. Small ideas can become BIG ideas overnight! The small company has just as much opportunity as the large conglomerates.

I was reading a friends blog today at here which linked me to a very thought-provoking article here.
Heres the reply I posted.

Interesting article, it will take some time for me to digest. It is quite revolutionary thinking, challenging if we were to actually live it out. I'll be honest, I find the 10% tithe convenient and easy, I've been doing it for 10 years now, and I've always given in other ways above the "tithe" (mission trips, sponsoring children, opening our home to guests, lending equipment, volunteering at church, building homes with 'Habitat for Humanity', and much more). There is great joy to be found in giving. However, in the past few months I have been restless with the tithe, not with the amount or why I give, but because of a comment from a friend of mine who happens to work in the sales department of a prominent christian company here in Nashville. She commented at the staggering amount of churches (her customers) who 'waste' thousands of dollars without even blinking an eyelid or caring. I'm not just talking about buying excessive merchandise, but on frivolous things like unnecessarily overnighting a huge order rather than sending regular 3 day mail, costing hundreds, not taking advantage of coupons or savings programs saving literally thousands. This blew me away!! If they have no problem wasting this sort of cash on merchandise and sheet music, it leads me to believe it occurs in other areas of church spending??

Now, that said, I know there are probably many churches who are good stewards of the money God had entrusted to them. But I wonder about the poor lady in that frivolous church who has faithfully given her 10% of a social security check of $1000. It may be a small $100 in the grand scheme of the church 'budget', but for her it means waiting another two months, saving extra hard, so she can visit her grandchildren in VA. Her $100 wasted! I ask the question, Is this right? Is this what God had intended for the tithe?

I have attended churches where the 'tithe' is worshiped, it gets its own 10 minute talk every service and its importance is placed high on a pedestal....... way above Jesus' mandate that we "look after orphans and widows". Is this right? Is this what God had intended? I think not!

Giving is an attitude of the heart. I give to my church because I love my church, I enjoy their programs, and I can help fund the churches outreach ventures..... and there are many. I don't give because I want a 100 fold blessing in return! If it comes, hallelujah, But I am not motivated by what I get in return. I also have no problem with sending money to a friend, a college student who is planning a mission trip to Sudan, and if need be, cutting into my church tithe for that week, depending on where my family is in our finances. The bottom line is this, God doesn't need our money, he wants our hearts, and often the way to our hearts in through our checkbook. True?

Have you ever been hailed on?

Well, today I did! I was at an airshow with a bunch of friends enjoying the jet fighters and old WWII airplanes that were showcased like a museum on the runway. I had left my wife and her two girlfriends on a large grass field under the umbrella to block the sun and headed with my mates to the flight Simulator. We had walked passed it three times earlier that day and made mental notes to re-visit it before the actual airshow begun. So, here we are, waiting in-line for the $7 simulator when this rather large stormcloud looms overhead. It looks as if it had parted and was to pass over us, the air-traffic control and commentary going on over the loudspeaker gave no imminent warning that this cloud was any threat to out day of adventure.

Five-minutes later, still in line, we felt our first raindrop..... Big raindrops, but rather sparse. I was glad I left the umbrella with Jody and the girls..... Us boys could fend for ourselves, we're men! The drops of rain turned to an immediate downpour and people begin to run under any available shelter...... Remember we are on a runway. So, I assume a hiding position under the tow-bar of a semi-trailer, others are hiding under airplane wings. After 5 minutes of heavy downpour and complete saturation from the waist down, I turn to the other 9 people who have called the shelter of the semi-trailer home and make a few jokes. Suddenly the rain turns to hail and is pelting down on our legs, the wind begins to violently shift direction, the temperature has just dropped 20 degrees, and everyone fears the worst...... A tornado!!! I stare out from underneath the trailers protection, legs being whipped by the ice being violently thrown about by the wind trying to catch a glimpse of the girls....... But, I couldn't see further than five meters due to the rain/hail and wind. My only thought now was the girls....... Had they found shelter with the first raindrops?....? What should I do, should I run to find them?

Twenty minutes passed and the storm began to ease, we emerged from our shelter to find a trail of debris everywhere. Tents had been ripped apart, port-a-johns tipped over, umbrellas broken and mangled on the field. Our frantic attempts to call the girls, finally availed and they had found shelter behind a large truck and we're ok. We hurried to meet them with hugs and kisses. THEN........ To make things worse, they cancelled the airshow! We braved the storm for nothing.

Its funny how an airport/airshow with access to the most accurate and up-to-date weather technology could fail to mention to the 20,000 spectators that a large storm was about to hit and it was bringing hail. Um...... kinda an important detail!

Oh well, all in all... We had an adventure! No one was injured, the sun came back out smiling as if nothing had ever happened. It reminds me of life...... Every terrible storm will eventually pass and the sun will shine on that very land.

BIG announcement!!

Well folks.......... Monday was an exciting day for Jody and I. We went to the Dr's for an ultrasound and it's confirmed..............We're having a little boy! I can't tell you how excited we are, the first thing we did was jump in the car and head straight to target to look at little 'boy' things :) There's so much to choose from.

Now for an endless list of chores in preparation for his arrival. Some smaller tasks like, buying diapers and bottles all the way to 'kinda important' things like finding a name!!!! This task has proven to be more difficult than I first anticipated. I though a name would just 'pop' out of the sky like a lightning bolt from heaven with music in the background and an angel declaring that my son has been sent by God to do 'great and mighty things in the earth', then that angel would give me a scroll of all that my Son would do in life so that I could prepare and train him for these things........ Right!!!! NOT! Ha! No the reality is there are these baby name websites that we spend hours reading and searching for 'the perfect name'...... One we both like. Once that's done (which may be never!!) we have to choose a middle name....... :) Oh the joys!

Ahhhhh, all the naming issues aside, this is a wonderful experience. Watching this miracle happen inside my wife tummy is one of the most amazing things I have ever witnessed in my entire life. To know that my Son is growing and changing inside her womb everyday, getting stronger, growing limbs, making nerves and muscles, learning, discovering and preparing for arrival into the world!! WOW!! God is truly great!! I thank Him everyday for the wonderful and precious gift that is growing within Jody and I can't wait for him to finish brewing!! :)

A weekend in Nashville

I had a great weekend!! Saturday began with a rather large sleep in toll 10:30am, Then I arose and did some much needed cleaning of my studio upstairs. At 3:30 I went up the street to help set up for our 'block party, which begun at 4:00. I'm on the Homeowners Association board of my community, so I helped get everything ready; We had a gourmet chef cooking on grills, a facepainter for the kids, a blow-up jumpy thing for the kids also, music and plenty of food and fun. It was a great afternoon!

I left early to head down to my show that evening in Donelson, on the east side of Nashville. Actually the church ended up only being a 5-minute drive from where Jody and I used to live by 'Percy Priest Lake'. We set up and had a wonderful night at Donelson United Methodist Church, met some fantastic people and had a fun concert. Actually, it was great to see one of my old students, Taylor Quinn .......... Only thing is, now he's taller than me ;) That just aint right!! Here's a picture of me with some of the kids in the youth group.

Sunday came and was an equally magnificent day. My church, 'The Peoples Church' has a new church plant in Spring Hill, so we went to check it out. It was great!! Only five minutes from home :) Then we had a 'Sunday nap' - a required event whenever I'm home on the weekend. Then we visited some friends of ours new house in Nashville.

After many of you have commented and emailed about my 'slack-ness' in keeping up my blog entries since the Aussie tour, I've decided to once again share my amazing journeys with you. My sorry excuse has been that right now there's a lot going on in the life of Lucas...... I have a baby on the way :) ....... Due in October, busy booking a new schools tour beginning in late August when schools return, In November I'll be in Kenya and Uganda for 10 days......... And I've had a few shows since my return. But, nonetheless........ I know its no excuse to leave you all in the dark, so.... I'm sorry! I'll try and be better :) However, before you get your hopes up too high,
come back and visit every other day or say every 3 days, because I'll add a new post every few days. See ya round!!
